History
The Assistance League of Greeley is one of 120 chapters of the National Assistance League nationwide. The first Assistance League was founded in southern California in 1919, at the end of World War I. Several women wanted to help the population that was affected so drastically by the war. This organization was organized as a non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian organization which recognizes the potential of volunteers helping those less fortunate to a better and more meaningful life.
There are four chapters in Colorado: Greeley, Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. Each chapter is an autonomous, tax-exempt charitable corporation, whose philanthropic programs are run to support the needs of the local communities where the chapters are located.
Greeley’s chapter started as an Assistance League Guild on May 15, 1970. A thrift store was opened at 1020 8th street on October 1, 1970. The first fundraising activity was a garage sale that resulted in $300.79. Each member was asked to provide $50.00 in merchandise to stock the thrift store. The Assistance League of Greeley was chartered in 1973 as the 54th chapter of Assistance League. This year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary.
Operating in several downtown locations until 2000, the chapter bought our current building at 1706 9th Street in February, 2000.
Although ALG has supported other programs since its charter, our current signature philanthropic programs include:
Single parent scholarships - 1991
Warm Up Weld County - 1993
Assault Survivor Kits®- 1995
File of Life® - 2000
Operation School Bell® - 2004
Color Me Weld - 2017
Funding for programs comes from Bargain Box proceeds, grants, and donations. All our programs help where no one else was helping at the time of development - Transforming Lives, Strengthening Community.
